SCOUTING REPORT
Mercado isn’t a consensus to be picked in the 9-14 range, where the Pirates have two picks. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. No one has him in that range, with most of the rankings putting him just outside number 14. He does have a chance to move up the ranks and be this year’s Carlos Correa (who was ranked in the 15-20 range pre-season and jumped to the first overall pick last year). Most of that is because he’s an athletic shortstop who projects to stick at the position. He played in the East Coast Showcase last summer, which has an impressive list of talented players who have played in the event in the past. He’s got some offensive potential, but has been inconsistent. He has the defense to stick at short, and a big offensive year could move him up the draft board, similar to Carlos Correa in 2012 and Francisco Lindor in 2011. If he takes a jump like Correa, the Pirates won’t have a shot at him.
