PROFILE |
Hibbing is a tall, right-handed relief pitcher from the University of Iowa. He had strong stats as a senior, posting a 1.57 ERA and a 5:47 BB:K ratio in 51.2 innings. In 2014, he had a 4.74 ERA in 43.2 innings and issued 15 walks, which isn’t bad, but nowhere near his 2015 control numbers. The Pirates drafted him four years earlier as a prep player. At the time, he threw 88-91 mph, with a curve and slider. Scouts then considered him a candidate for the top ten rounds, until he missed a start with a tender ulnar nerve in his forearm. He signed soon after the draft.
2015 Hibbing pitched out of the Morgantown bullpen. He put up strong numbers despite a low K rate, helped by good control and a slightly low .275 BABIP. He had a reverse platoon split, holding left-handed hitters so a .576 OPS while right-handed hitters posted a .744 figure. He was more of a flyball than a groundball pitcher. Hibbing has the physique that the Pirates like in starting pitchers, so it’ll be interesting to see whether they try him in that role. He’ll probably be at West Virginia in 2016. |
