WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES
|Irving was a three-year starter at UVa. He didn’t hit much and showed no power, but he did draw a lot of walks, more than he had strikeouts. Baseball America characterized him as a good receiver with an accurate, average-strength arm, but he’s thrown out only three of 21 base stealers as a pro. Arizona released him after very limited action over two seasons and the Pirates signed him to a minor league contract.
Irving saw only brief action in short season ball.
The D’backs sent Irving back to short season ball, where he served as a backup. He showed good plate discipline and little power.
Irving will likely provide catching depth at the lower levels of the system.
