WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

Reyes is a long-time organizational catcher who’s graduated over the last few years to coaching duties.  He gives the team the added advantage of being able to step in short term at any level in case of emergencies, which have been in no short supply among the organization’s catchers the last couple years.  Early in his career Reyes was a good defensive catcher, although his CS% declined a lot in his last few years.  He’s never been able to hit at all.  He’s expected to act as a player/coach in 2012.

2001
R:  054/122/081, 37 AB, 1 2B, 2 BB, 5 K
A+:  103/188/103, 29 AB, 2 BB, 7 K

It was obvious from the start that Reyes would be an organizational catcher, as he split his limited playing time between the GCL and high A, where he was needed due to injuries.  He didn’t hit at all, but threw out 42% of base stealers between the two levels.

2002
R:  159/222/206, 107 AB, 2 2B, 1 HR, 6 BB, 16 K
A:  214/267/357, 14 AB, 2 2B, 2 BB, 3 K

Threw out 38% total.

2003
A-:  216/252/264, 125 AB, 6 2B, 3 BB, 22 K
A:  091/118/182, 33 AB, 1 HR, 1 BB, 9 K

Reyes got about half the playing time at Williamsport, which was a little surprising because the other catcher, Mike McCuistion, was an actual prospect.

2004
A-:  171/230/219, 105 AB, 2 2B, 1 HR, 6 BB, 19 K, 1-3 SB
A:  227/239/307, 88 AB, 1 2B, 2 HR, 1 BB, 16 K, 0-1 SB

Reyes again got about half the playing time at Williamsport as the team’s other catcher, Brandon Reddinger, managed to hit significantly worse than Reyes.  He also attempted the only steals of his career.

2005
A:  188/259/256, 133 AB, 2 2B, 2 3B, 1 HR, 12 BB, 18 K

Reyes spent the season as the backup catcher at Hickory.  Originally, Neil Walker and Steve Lerud were supposed to share catcher and DH duties, but Lerud missed most of the season with a broken hand.  Reyes threw out 36% of base stealers and hit his only two career triples.

2006
A+:  273/273/273, 11 AB
AA:  193/225/217, 166 AB, 4 2B, 6 BB, 19 K

The Pirates didn’t really have a catcher for Altoona, so Reyes ended up sharing the position mainly with minor league veteran Dave Parrish.

2007
AA:  230/275/284, 74 AB, 4 2B, 5 BB, 19 K
AAA:  226/351/258, 31 AB, 1 2B, 5 BB, 7 K

Reyes returned to Altoona, but got his only AAA stint when the Pirates had to call up Carlos Maldonado.

2008
AA:  187/223/233, 150 AB, 4 2B, 1 HR, 7 BB, 31 K

Reyes was more of a coach by this time, but he got pressed into duty at Altoona when Miguel Perez got hurt.

2009
AA:  282/349/410, 39 AB, 5 2B, 4 BB, 9 K

Reyes got pressed into duty on a more limited basis due to injuries and put up the best batting line of his career.

2010
A+:  091/167/091, 11 AB, 2 K

Reyes appeared briefly at Bradenton when Tony Sanchez and Eric Fryer both got hit in the face with pitches.

2011
Did not play

Reyes will no doubt return primarily to his coaching duties in 2012, but will be available in the event of another catcher armageddon.
