Del Rosario is a lefty with good size. At the time they signed him, he reportedly could throw up to 93 mph. Early in training camp in 2013 he was throwing only 83-84, although with a good curve. He’s had exceptionally low K rates in the DSL.
2011 Splitting his time between starting and closing, Del Rosario pitched effectively but with an extremely low K rate. 2012 Pitching strictly as a starter, Del Rosario improved, mainly in the form of an extremely low walk rate, but he continued to fan very few hitters. 2013 Del Rosario pitched mainly in relief in the GCL. He was much more effective than his ERA indicates, although he did allow four HRs. His K rate was much improved. 2014 The Pirates sent Del Rosario to Bristol, where he mostly pitched in relief but did make three starts. Obviously, the numbers were poor. Oddly, he pitched better in the three starts, allowing a .704 opponents’ OPS, as opposed to .923 in relief. Right-handed hitters wore him out to the tune of a 314/383/524 line. 2015 Del Rosario returned to the Bristol, pitching strictly out of the bullpen. He improved a little, but still didn’t pitch especially well. Del Rosario hasn’t done much to get on the prospect track, but LHPs generally got a lot of chances, especially ones with good size. He’s eligible for the Rule 5 draft for the second time. |
