WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

The Pirates took Rossiter for the second year in a row, only 17 rounds earlier this time around.  During his two years in JC ball at Central Arizona College and his first year at Arizona State, he showed the ability to hit for average with some doubles power, but his hitting took a backward step during his senior year.  His calling card is defense, as he handles a staff and receives well.  His arm is average, but it plays better than that due to accuracy and good footwork.  Baseball America rated him the 14th best prospect in Arizona in 2012, then 13th best in Arizona and 475th overall in 2013.  As a senior, he signed quickly and will head to Jamestown.  The Pirates are happy with the role played by a similar catcher, Jacob Stallings, and could be looking for another experienced college backstop to handle their young pitchers.
