WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES |
Pevny was a multisport athlete in high school, and was a star hitter as well as pitcher on the baseball team. He converted to the mound from shortstop in 2010, so the Pirates undoubtedly drafted him based on future potential. Pevny had a commitment to Fairleigh-Dickinson, but was unhappy when the the coach who signed him resigned. This, and the prospect of the Pirates paying for a college education after he’s through playing baseball, led to him signing with the Pirates. His fastball reportedly was in the upper-80s, reaching as high as 92. During the 2011 season he was throwing mainly 88-90. He also throws a curve.
2010 Pevny signed in time to see action in the GCL but, unfortunately, he went on the disabled list after three appearances. 2011 Pevny went back to the GCL and pitched decently. He even led the league in wins, pitching mostly in relief. He showed good control but didn’t strike out many. 2012 Pevny pitched well in relief at State College, although not quite as well as the ERA indicates. His walk and K rates weren’t good, especially the latter. The Pirates are bringing Pevny along slowly, but he could get a shot at West Virginia in 2013. He needs to step up to avoid getting classified as an organizational pitcher. |
