WTM’S PLAYER PROFILE |
Simmons signed at about the same time as another Bahamas native, Larry Alcime, although he didn’t get a large bonus, as Alcime did. His primary tools are speed and his arm, as he pitched previously. He’s played second almost exclusively as a pro, with just a few games at short.
2015 Simmons got into just a few games after signing, mostly at second. 2016 Simmons was the most frequent second baseman in the DSL. Other than drawing a huge number of walks, he did little at the plate, with no power at all. 2017 The Pirates returned Simmons for a third DSL season, as the starter at second. He again had an enormous walk total, but otherwise didn’t hit. He struck out a lot and showed no power. The Pirates invited Simmons to fall instructional league. He’ll probably serve as a utility player and given his age — he’ll play the season at 21 — he could conceivably go to Bristol. |
