SCOUTING REPORT
Crawford joins Oscar Mercado at the top of the prep shortstop ranks, and he might even be the top shortstop in the draft. He’s got strong defensive skills, highlighted by a plus arm. Jonathan Mayo says he has easy, flowing motions defensively, while Baseball America says he has a slick glove. His defense should be enough to keep him in the first round, and where he ends up really depends on his hitting abilities. In the last two years there have been prep shortstops who have soared up the draft ranks. Francisco Lindor jumped into the top 10 in 2011, and Carlos Correa jumped all the way to first overall in 2012. Crawford will need strong hitting, just like those two, in order to go in the top half of the draft.
