Bishop wasn’t as heralded as Yhonathan Barrios among the Pirates’ Latin American signees for 2009, but he created attention for himself with a good performance in the VSL in 2009. He’s played second, third and short at different times, showing good range. He also has good speed on the bases.
2009 Hit .360 with very good power through end of June, but slumped in July, hitting .216. Showed surprising power for a small guy. Tied for third in VSL in steals with 24 in 31 tries, and led league in runs. 2010 Moved up to the GCL (along with a brief injury fill-in at high A). Again started season better than he finished, as his BA dropped about 40 points from June to July and again in August. Showed some speed and power, with marginal plate discipline. 2011 Opened season playing second for State College, but was overmatched. Sent down after 13 games and didn’t hit in GCL, either. Bishop played mainly third after Yonathan Barrios got hurt. Showed more of a willingness to take pitches, drawing nine walks and fanning only nine times in the GCL. His base stealing dropped off. 2012 Bishop spent the season back in the GCL. He played a lot at short until Max Moroff and Jimmy Rider joined the team, then served as a backup. He didn’t hit much other than drawing some walks, although he did well on the bases. Bishop isn’t making any progress and is obviously an organizational player now. If he’s back in 2013, it’ll probably be as a backup at one or more of the low-level teams. |
