WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE |
Medrano didn’t hit a play a great deal in his first two years at Fresno State and put up an OPS of just .509 and .503. He played a little more as a junior and hit 326/359/406. As a senior he had a big year, batting 346/390/543, with all of his seven career HRs. He seldom walked but didn’t strike out much, either. Medrano also played second base and shortstop. He signed two weeks after the draft.
2017 Medrano was slated to be the starting third baseman in the GCL, but a hand injury cost him over half the season. He was old for the level at 22, but the idea apparently was to put a more experienced player on the field with what figured to be a fairly young group of position players otherwise. When Medrano played, he struggled to hit at all until a pair of four-hit games in the last five days of the season boosted his numbers. 2018 Medrano stayed in extended spring training, then went to Bradenton to fill in briefly in late May. In early June he shifted to West Virginia and spent the rest of the season there as a utility player. He played third primarily, but he saw some time at second and also caught in five games, three of them starts. 2019 Medrano spent the season in a utility role at Bradenton, apart from a late-season promotion to Altoona. He split his time between third and second, playing very solid defense; in fact, he didn’t commit an error all year. Obviously, he didn’t hit at all. Medrano’s defense will probably assure him a job somewhere in 2020. |
