WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE |
The Pirates drafted Hartman as a college senior with only limited experience pitching. He was a position player at Tallahassee JC in 2017, then went to Central Florida CC for a year, which he spent as a two-way player. In 2019-20 Hartman was strictly a reliever at Appalachian State. He had high K rates there, but struggled to throw strikes. In his time at Appalachian State, he gave up 33 hits and 26 walks in 33.2 IP, with 48 strikeouts. Hartman throws his fastball at 94-97 and has an inconsistent slider that, at its best, is a plus pitch. He also throws a curve. All of his pitches have high spin rates. Hartman will almost certainly be a reliever, but could be an effective setup man if he can improve his command. Baseball America ranked him 286th among draft prospects. Like fifth rounder Logan Hofmann, the Pirates may have picked Hartman to help save some bonus pool money to sign earlier selections, although he has more upside than the typical college senior. He signed for $60,000, well below the slot value of $538,200.
2020 At some point after he signed, Hartman had Tommy John surgery. 2021 Following the surgery, Hartman missed the entire season. 2022 The Pirates activated Hartman in late May and he made his debut with Bradenton. He ultimately pitched in 22 games, never more than an inning, and he struggled from beginning to end. How much of Hartman’s 2022 struggles can be attributed to the Tommy John aftermath obviously is impossible to say. Hopefully he’ll be with Greensboro in 2023. |
