Hurst is a big guy who’s reached 95 with his fastball. It sits at 88-92. His other pitches still need work. He had Tommy John surgery while he was still in 8th grade. Baseball America rated Hurst the 405th best talent in the draft. He also hit well as a first baseman when he wasn’t pitching. Hurst had a commitment to Florida State, but he signed shortly before the deadline for well over the slot amount. At the time he signed he hadn’t pitched for an extended period, so the Pirates didn’t try to get him into any games. He pitched in only one game, though, through spring of 2014. At that point, the Pirates moved him to first base.
2013 Hurst was able to pitch only once and it obviously didn’t go well. He walked all five batters he faced — the only out he recorded came on the bases — and also threw two wild pitches. 2014 It’s not clear whether Hurst wasn’t able to pitch due to injury issues, but he stayed out of action until late July and then began appearing semi-regularly as a DH, along with three games at first. Hurst did little at the plate, striking out in half his ABs and getting no extra base hits. Given the size of his bonus, the Pirates may stick with Hurst a little longer, but it wouldn’t be surprising if he did not return in 2015. He doesn’t appear ready to move up from the GCL. |
