WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES |
Rodriguez is a tall, lean firstbaseman whom the Pirates may have expected would add power as he filled out. He’s fairly athletic and I’ve seen him make some good defensive plays, but he’s also had some problems with errors. He’s signed for 2011, but probably will serve as a player/coach.
2006 Saw brief action in debut. 2007 Had a decent season, hitting for some power. 2008 Hit better overall in his third DSL season, showing very good plate discipline and even stealing a lot of bases, but his power dropped off. 2009 Rodriguez served as the regular firstbaseman in the GCL and was hitting well going into August, but slumped to his final numbers. 2010 Rodriguez played first for State College when Matt Curry wasn’t in the lineup and also served sometimes as the DH. He didn’t hit much and continued to have moderate problems with the strike zone. 2011 The Pirates released Rodriguez at the end of spring training. They re-signed him in April, but he didn’t play all year. Rodriguez became a free agent after the 2011, but quickly re-signed with the Pirates. He’s probably serving as a coach now, but could see limited action on an emergency basis. |
