WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES |
The Pirates signed Sepulveda out of Mexico. He throws in the 88-90 range. His best pitch is probably a slider and he also throws a change. He spent three seasons in the DSL, although he pitched very little in one of them. He didn’t have much success, but pitched very well in winter ball, which possibly led the Pirates to bring him to the US in 2017.
2014 Pitching strictly in relief, Sepulveda struggled in his pro debut. 2015 Sepulveda got into only three games, all in relief. 2016 Back in the DSL for a third season, Sepulveda continued to struggle, getting hit hard and missing very few bats. He continued to pitch strictly in relief. 2017 Sepulveda opened the season at Bristol. He got into two games and was sent down to the GCL after allowing five unearned runs in the second one. (In a fairly typical display for Bristol, Sepulveda’s teammates committed three errors in a span of four plays, so the Pirates may have sent him down simply because some of their draftees arrived.) In the GCL, Sepulveda’s performance was much better than his ERA. The Pirates could try Sepulveda at Bristol in 2018. |
