WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE |
Santana was 20 when the Pirates signed him shortly after the start of the 2018 season in the Dominican Summer League. He’s a small right-hander who throws 90-92 and adds a changeup.
2018 Pitching mainly in short relief, Santana struck out a lot of hitters, but opponents batted .293 against him and he walked a batter an inning. 2019 The Pirates must have felt Santana made a lot of progress in extended spring training, because they sent him to Bristol to pitch in relief. He wasn’t all that effective, with opponents batting .292 against him, but he missed a lot of bats and started getting a handle on his control issues. He had a huge platoon split; right-handed hitters managed only a .505 OPS against him, but left-handed hitters torched him to the tune of 1.008. Santana made a lot of progress in 2019. Factors against him are a lack of overwhelming stuff or projectability. He’ll be 22 when the 2020 season starts. |
