WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE |
Muhl pitched out of the George Washington bullpen during his entire, four-year college career, mainly as a closer. In 2017, he had a 3.04 ERA in 47.1 innings. He walked (25) more than he struck out (22). He actually had better numbers in his previous three years, when he combined for a 2.61 ERA in 93.1 innings, with a 73:42 K/BB ratio and 29 saves. Muhl throws from a sidearm angle, as the photo shows. The Pirates seem to have some connection to George Washington, as they drafted and signed Kevin Mahala from that school in 2016 and Shane Kemp in 2015.
2017 Muhl pitched mainly in short relief for Bristol. He wasn’t as effective as the ERA suggests, as seven of the 13 runs he allowed were unearned. Then again, the Bristol defense was remarkably bad. Muhl missed very few bats and opponents hit .279 against him. He was an extreme groundball pitcher and had a very extreme split, both possibly due to the sidearm motion. He held right-handed hitters to a 203/250/203 line, while left-handed hitters torched him to the tune of 400/447/700. Of course, the sample sizes were very small. Muhl’s success against right-handed hitters could make him interesting going forward. He could appear at West Virginia at some point in 2018. |
