WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE |
Valdez’ main asset is raw power, or at least that was the idea when he signed. After doing reasonably well in his debut season as a first baseman/outfielder, he moved primarily, although not entirely, to the mound.
2020 2021 In his debut, Valdez hit reasonably well, with a much better BB:K ratio than many other young prospects. He didn’t, however, show much power. He divided his time between first and right. 2022 DSL: 1-1-0, 8.56 ERA, 1.90 WHIP, 13.2 IP, 6.6 BB/9, 8.6 K/9 Valdez seemed a likely candidate for the FCL in 2022, but the Pirates sent him back to the DSL and he transitioned to the mound. He pitched regularly starting in late June, and made a few appearances as a hitter, mainly as DH. The pitching so far has a long way to go. Thanks in part to the pandemic, Valdez will be eligible for Rule 5 after the 2023 season even though he hasn’t played much yet. |
