WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE |
Cruz got the largest bonus of the Pirates’ July 2 signings, although Po-Yu Chen later got a larger one. Cruz throws four- and two-seam fastballs and has reached 94 mph. He also throws a slider, curve and change, and has a good feel for pitching, as well as good projection.
2020 2021 After the 2020 season was wiped out, the Pirates brought Cruz to the FCL for his debut. It didn’t go well, as Cruz struggled to throw strikes. Other than control problems, he held his own in July and August, but he got bombed in two September starts. 2022 The Pirates sent Cruz back to the FCL and he had almost exactly the same season as 2021. Literally. Exact same IP, WHIP and strikeouts. Three fewer walks but three more hits. At this point, Cruz’ signing bonus is not looking like money well spent. He’s eligible for the Rule 5 draft after another year and doesn’t look at all ready for full season ball. |
