WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE |
Wood is a second baseman with a good bat and a very patient approach. As a junior, he batted 315/462/435, with 60 walks and 43 strikeouts in 232 ABs. He also stole 20 bases in 23 tries, although MLB Pipeline characterizes his speed as dropping from above-average to average between his sophomore and junior seasons. His power is below-average; as a reference point, his team as a whole slugged .503 in 2019. As a freshman and sophomore, Wood had nearly identical numbers, with an OPS of .820 and .825, respectively. MLBP states that his defense will need to improve.
2019 Wood was the primary second baseman at West Virginia and also started nine games at short. His slash line was very close to league average. He didn’t handle LHPs well, with a .588 OPS against them. He had a .691 OPS against RHPs. Wood could be the second baseman at Greensboro. Long term, he’s more likely to settle into a utility role unless he takes a step forward on offense. |
