WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE |
Gordon was listed as a right fielder by MLB, but the Pirates announced him as a left-handed pitcher. Based on some of the changes he’s made this year, that doesn’t seem like a bad call. He sits 87-92 MPH with his fastball, while also throwing a slider, changeup, and a curveball. The curveball is a new pitch, and paired with a more aggressive approach of filling up the zone and challenging hitters, has led to some good results this year. That included a perfect game in April, when he struck out 13 of 15 batters faced on just 64 pitches. He followed that up with a no-hitter in May, finishing with nine strikeouts. In his first four starts, he had 48 strikeouts in 22.1 innings, and the strikeouts continued as the season went on. He also improved his stamina this year, being able to go deeper into games. His head coach is former Pirates pitcher Randy Tomlin. Gordon has a commitment to Liberty University. |
