WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE |
The Pirates signed Charle late in the 2017-18 international signing period. He throws two pitches: a 94-95 mph fastball and a second pitch that FanGraphs called a change and Statcast categorizes as a cutter. Whatever it is exactly, it’s an effective pitch that Charle throws at different speeds, all much slower than the fastball.
2018 Charle pitched mostly in relief in the DSL and, obviously, had trouble, mainly due to poor control. 2019 Charle got hit with a PED suspension and, as a result, missed the 2019 season. 2020 2021 Charle pitched in long relief in the FCL and was very effective, with excellent walk and K rates. He moved up to Bradenton late in the season and got into five games in relief. His walk and K rates remained good, but he got hit a lot harder, with opponents batting .298 against him. 2022 Charle had a strong season. He was largely dominant at Bradenton for 20 games, then moved up to Greensboro for another dozen. He didn’t miss as many bats there, but got nearly as good results. He had two bad outings in which he gave up six runs, but he allowed just one in the other ten. Charle is Rule 5 eligible now, but the Pirates will probably figure that another team will be reluctant to select a pitcher who hasn’t reached a higher level. It’ll be interesting to see whether he opens 2023 at Altoona. |
