PROFILE

Plitt fits probably the single most common profile for a Pirates’ draftee:  a 6’4″ right-handed pitcher.  He’s listed at 160 pounds on his school’s website and MLB has him at 170, so he obviously has some room to fill out.  He was undrafted out of High School and stayed local, spending two seasons at South Mountain CC.  Reports from 2013 had him throwing his fastball in the low-80’s.  In 2014, he had a 1.87 ERA over 77 innings.  His ERA went up to 3.42 in 2015 and he had a 24:56 BB/SO ratio in 81.2 innings.  After signing, which he did shortly after the draft, Plitt’s fastball generally was in the 86-88 range, but sometimes dropping to the mid-80s after a few innings.

2015
R:  4-1-0, 2.88 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, 40.2 IP, 0.7 BB/9, 6.2 K/9

The Pirates sent Plitt to the GCL and he got excellent results there, albeit with a low K rate.  He hardly walked anybody, but had a little trouble with gopher balls, allowing six, and didn’t strike out many.  As a JC draftee, he should have been a little more advanced than many of the league’s players.

2016
INJURED

Plitt was dealing with a UCL sprain in extended spring training and ended up missing the entire season.

The Pirates no doubt are hoping that Plitt will add velocity as he gets older and stronger.  Assuming he’s able to pitch in 2017, he could go to Bristol or Morgantown.
