WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

Lashmet was a solid offensive performer for Northwestern for four years, but was never previously drafted.  Baseball America rated him the 25th best prospect in a weak year for Illinois, without explanation.  He doesn’t appear to have great power and is likely to be an organizational player.  Lashmet signed a couple weeks after the draft.

2011
A-:  231/304/310, 216 AB, 11 2B, 2 HR, 21 BB, 31 K, 2-4 SB

Went to State College and didn’t hit much.  He struggled especially in August, hitting .190.  His plate discipline wasn’t bad, as he fanned only once every seven ABs and walked once for every ten ABs, so he doesn’t seem to have been overwhelmed.  He played a lot at first until Alex Dickerson arrived, then was the primary thirdbaseman after that.

2012
A:  230/297/316, 313 AB, 15 2B, 3 3B, 2 HR, 28 BB, 62 K, 2-6 SB

Lashmet spent the season as a corner utility player at West Virginia.  He handled LHPs pretty well, hitting 276/344/397, but didn’t hit RHPs at all, with just a .538 OPS, leading to poor overall numbers.  He played first, third and a little in left.

Lashmet hasn’t been overwhelmed at the plate–his K rate isn’t terrible, for instance–so it’s possible he may still catch on well enough to advance.  Sometimes a college hitter will struggle for a couple years and then start to hit, although it may be partly a product of being old for his levels.  Miles Durham is an example.  Lashmet will turn 24 early next season and obviously will be an organizational player.  He’ll open 2013 in a utility role at Bradenton.
