Interview with Casey Erickson

WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

The Pirates acquired Erickson, along with C/OF Eric Fryer, from the Yankees for Eric Hinske. He’s a finesse pitcher, throwing a sinker at 86-90 and three other pitches, the best of which is a slider. He’s an extreme groundball pitcher, posting ground out to air out ratios of 2.59, 3.23 and 1.86 in 2008-10. He obviously keeps the ball in the park very well. He also, however, has advanced only slowly and gives up a lot of hits, so it’s hard to see him as more than a very marginal prospect.

2006-08: Spent three years in short season ball, which isn’t good for pitcher signed out of college. Had good BB and K numbers, but was a little too hittable.

2009: Finally opened in full-season league. Had low ERA but somewhat high WHIP. It helped that he allowed no HRs. After trade, continued to pitch mainly in relief for West Virginia, often as closer. Walked very few and had decent K numbers, and was harder to hit than before the trade.

2010: Pitched mainly in Bradenton bullpen and had ERA of 2.28 in thirty relief outings. Overall numbers were hurt by six starts, in which he allowed 15 earned runs in just 20.2 IP. Struggled with LH hitters, who hit .323 against him, compared to only .205 for RH hitters.

Erickson is eligible for the Rule 5 draft, but he doesn’t have the kind of ceiling that would make it worth adding him to the 40-man roster. In addition, he was 25 at the end of the season. If he’s still in the organization he should be in the Altoona bullpen in 2011.
