WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES |
Deatherage was rated the 441st overall prospect by Baseball America. He gets an 80-grade speed rating, running a 6.3 60-yard dash. He didn’t have a good season at the plate this year, hitting for a .218/.304/.330 line in 188 at-bats. He also had some big strikeout issues, striking out 57 times. Baseball America noted that he has a choppy swing, and got into the habit of trying to bunt his way on to avoid strikeouts throughout the year. He’s got the range for center field, but has a fringe-average arm, which could play in center, but is probably suited best for left field. He seems very similar to last year’s 23rd round pick Garrett Brown, as a guy with elite speed, but no other tools and a lack of feel for the game at this point. If the Pirates can sign him, they’ll likely be doing so for the one tool that you can’t teach, while hoping to develop the rest of the game, and hoping to fix the swing at the plate. |
