WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

Dragmire’s big attraction is a very high groundball rate.  In the minors, he’s had ground out to fly out ratios that have mostly been well over 2-to-1.  He throws a sinking fastball that sits at 92-94 mph and can get up to 96-97.  His best secondary pitch is a change and he throws a slider that scouts consider subpar.  He had extreme platoon splits in the low minors, but hasn’t had a split since he reached high A.  The Pirates acquired Dragmire for cash from Toronto, lost him two months later to Texas on a waiver claim, then claimed him back two weeks later.

2011
R:  0-0-0, 27.00 ERA, 3.00 WHIP, 1.0 IP, 9.0 BB/9, 9.0 K/9

Dragmire threw just one inning after signing late.

2012
R:  0-3-1, 1.14 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, 23.2 IP, 1.9 BB/9, 5.3 K/9

The Jays sent Dragmire back to rookie ball, where he pitched in relief.  He allowed very few baserunners while not missing many bats.

2013
R+:  3-2-2, 2.16 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, 50.0 IP, 1.4 BB/9, 7.2 K/9

Dragmire moved up just to advanced rookie ball and split his time between starting and relieving.  He had just about the same season as the year before, except with an improved K rate.

2014
A:  3-6-5, 2.92 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, 77.0 IP, 1.1 BB/9, 5.3 K/9

Pitching strictly in relief, Dragmire put up good numbers in low A, although he got hit a little harder and his K rate dropped back to a very low level.  He allowed only two longballs.

2015
A+:  2-2-1, 5.26 ERA, 1.58 WHIP, 63.1 IP, 2.8 BB/9, 8.1 K/9

Despite moving up to the low-offense Florida State League, Dragmire struggled, with opponents hitting .313 against him.  His walk rate nearly tripled from the previous year, although it was still good.  The only positives were a much-increased K rate and just one HR allowed.  Despite the rough season, the Jays added him to their 40-man roster afterward and Baseball America rated him Toronto’s 16th best prospect.

2016
AA:  4-6-1, 4.38 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, 72.0 IP, 3.5 BB/9, 5.1 K/9

Dragmire moved up to AA and continued to struggle.  His walk rate increased still more, his K rate plummeted, and he had gopher ball problems, allowing ten.  Opponents batted 284/357/425 against him.  The Jays designated him for assignment when they needed to add a reliever for the post-season, and the Pirates must have claimed him because they agreed on a cash deal.  The Pirates then lost him to Texas on a waiver claim, but the Rangers designated him for assignment shortly afterward to clear roster space for Carlos Gomez, and the Pirates claimed him.

Obviously, the Pirates must like Dragmire’s groundball tendencies, but his performance in 2015-16 wasn’t encouraging and he doesn’t appear to have more than a very modest ceiling.  He’s been very hittable the last two years and also has seen his control deteriorate.  He’s got two options left and so could provide pitching depth, but he doesn’t look anywhere close to being ready for the majors.  It’s likely the Pirates were trying to sneak Dragmire through waivers when they lost him to Texas, so they may try to do it again.

UPDATE:  When they signed Daniel Hudson, the Pirates naturally designated Dragmire for assignment to clear roster space.
