PROFILE

Synek caught as a senior with Evansville after playing second and third previously.  He was the team’s second-best hitter, putting up a 341/439/514 line with more walks (31) than strikeouts (22).  He played briefly with the Lake Erie Crushers of the Frontier League after going undrafted.  The Pirates signed him in mid-July, as injuries started depleting their catching depth.

2016
IND:  143/462/286, 7 AB, 1 2B, 4 BB, 1 K
R:  259/384/358, 81 AB, 4 2B, 2 3B, 13 BB, 10 K, 3-3 SB

Synek played semi-regularly after signing, splitting his time between catcher and DH.  He was one of the team’s better hitters, but that came as a 23-year-old in rookie ball.  The fact that a non-drafted free agent signed out of independent ball got so much playing time was an indication of the limited number of position prospects the Pirates have at the lower levels of their system.

Synek figures to serve as an organizational player at the lower levels of the system.
