WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

Chourio is a relatively tall shortstop with a wiry build.  He missed the 2012 season due to arm surgery, but was in minor league camp in 2013.  He looked impressive in batting practice, showing good power from the left side.  He was only 5’10”, 140 when the Pirates signed him, but now is probably even bigger than the 6’0″, 167 listed for him in the Pirates’ media guide.

2011
VSL:  200/308/233, 90 AB, 3 2B, 14 BB, 16 K, 2-10 SB

Chourio handled a little less than half the shortstop duties for the Pirates’ VSL entry.  Other than putting up good walk and K rates, he did little at the plate, which isn’t unusual for a 17-year-old in his first pro season.

2012
DSL:  —/—/—, 0 AB

Chourio had Tommy John surgery and effectively missed the season.  He got into two games, but had no plate appearances.

2013
DSL:  177/326/242, 186 AB, 4 2B, 4 3B, 41 BB, 52 K, 8-12 SB

Chourio was the regular at short for one of the Pirates’ two DSL entries.  He obviously didn’t hit as well in games as in batting practice.  He did draw a lot of walks, but also struck out frequently.  He committed only a dozen errors in 59 games at short, which is a low total for that level.

2014
R:  244/404/314, 86 AB, 4 2B, 1 3B, 23 BB, 26 K, 5-8 SB

The Pirates didn’t give Chourio a great deal of playing time in the GCL, as they had Cole Tucker at short, Julio De La Cruz at third and the badly overmatched Nelson Jorge at second.  Chourio was the primary backup at all three positions.  His main offensive contribution was a very high walk total.

2015
R+:  228/307/359, 145 AB, 11 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 16 BB, 50 K

Chourio opened the season playing only sparingly for Bristol, with Logan Ratledge at short.  Ratledge didn’t perform especially well, though, and Chourio eventually took over the position full time, showing good range there.  He showed some pop, but otherwise struggled at the plate, with a very high K rate.

Chourio will open the 2016 season at age 22.  It’s conceivable he could end up in low A, depending on Cole Tucker’s situation.  Otherwise he’s likely to go to Morgantown.
