WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES |
The Pirates signed Vasquez out of the Dominican way back in 2013. He wasn’t a prominent signee. He throws four pitches for strikes, including an average curve. His fastball has sat at 91-92, reaching 94, but has also been only in the 88-90 range. He throws a curve that needs to be tightened up.
2014 Vasquez appeared in ten games, all in relief. He was very effective, albeit with a low K rate. 2015 Vasquez served as a closer in the DSL and put up very good peripheral numbers. 2016 Vasquez missed the season due to Tommy John surgery. 2017 Vasquez opened the season in the DSL, making five relief appearances and then getting called up to the GCL. He had a very rough time there, with opponents batting .376 against him. The problem may have partly been the recovery process from the Tommy John surgery. Vasquez is already eligible for the Rule 5 draft and will be 24 at the start of the 2018 season. If he’s still around, it’ll probably be in the GCL. |
