WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE |
Maldonado signed at age 19 for a moderate bonus. He’s reached 95 mph and has some projection. He also has a good curve.
2019 The Pirates kept Maldonado in the rotation through a dozen starts despite some brutal control problems. That shows at least that they considered him to have some potential. 2020 Maldonado got suspended for PED use after the 2019 season. Although he wouldn’t have been able to play anyway, due to the pandemic, missing the season apparently satisfied the suspension. 2021 Maldonado had a strong season in the FCL, mostly as a starter. Control was a problem, but thanks largely to his breaking ball he missed a great many bats. Opponents batted .190 against him. His walk and K rates both improved steadily through the season. 2022 Maldonado’s season got cut short quickly. He struggled through four games in the FCL, then went out for the season with an injury. Maldonado has a good arm, but 2022 was a setback. He’s eligible for Rule 5 for the second time, not that there’s any chance of him being selected. |
