Potter drew some interest as a prep pitcher in showcase ball, with a fastball that sat at 89-92 and reached higher, along with a developing breaking ball and change. He had a rough senior year, though, with his velocity dropping sharply after a couple innings. He fell to the 31st round and, rather than going to junior college, signed with Arizona. He struggled through four seasons in low-level ball with them before being released. After a year in independent ball, he signed with the Pirates on a minor league deal for 2017.
2012 The Diamondbacks used Potter mostly in relief in rookie ball and he pitched respectably. He had some control problems, which showed up more in HBPs (10) and WPs (12) than walks. 2013 Potter struggled in advanced rookie ball, getting hit hard and continuing to have control issues, including six HBPs and a dozen WPs. 2014 Arizona sent Potter back to rookie ball and had him mainly starting, although none of his starts lasted more than two innings. He continued walking a lot of hitters and getting hit hard 2015 The D’backs tried Potter again in advanced rookie ball, pitching in relief. His struggles continued, including a wild pitch every other inning. Arizona released him after the season. 2016 Potter spent time with two different teams in the independent Frontier League. Pitching strictly in relief, he clearly didn’t make any progress. He eventually caught on with the less-well known United Shore Professional Baseball League, and was throwing in the mid-90s with far fewer walks. Potter’s stint in the USPBL apparently convinced the Pirates that he was worth a shot. He seems most likely to go to Bristol, but that’s just a guess. The Pirates no doubt will make an evaluation in spring training. |
