| The Pirates signed Montgomery as a non-drafted free agent. He spent two years at a junior college, where he struggled badly, posting ERAs of 9.10 and 8.44. From there he went to Southern Illinois, where he had an ERA of 9.89 his junior year, then improved to 5.44 as a senior. His first three seasons he pitched as a swing man, but as a senior he pitched strictly in relief, making 27 appearances. He walked 21 and struck out 27 in 43 innings. The Pirates may see some ability that’s not evident from the numbers; in 2019 he was throwing 94-96 mph with a good slider.
2018 The Pirates used Montgomery to pitch in relief in the late innings for Bristol, then moved him up to Morgantown for two outings at the end of the season. Between control issues and a little over a hit per inning, he allowed a lot of baserunners. Montgomery figures to be an organizational pitcher. |
