WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE

Reyes signed with the Mets for $200K a little after his 17th birthday.  He was regarded as a good athlete who was likely to stick at shortstop.  He was thought to have good contact skills, but that hasn’t proven true.  In three years in the Dominican Summer League, he drew a fair number of walks, but since moving to the US he hasn’t done that or hit much.  He’s a very good defender all over the field, with an outstanding arm.  The Pirates claimed Reyes from the Mets in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft.

2011
DSL:  191/297/229, 188 AB, 2 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 26 BB, 44 K, 6-12 SB

Reyes appears to have been a little overmatched at the plate in his debut, although he did draw a lot of walks.  He also had trouble with errors, committing 24 in 52 games.

2012
DSL:  232/285/283, 237 AB, 10 2B, 1 3B, 17 BB, 49 K, 9-12 SB

Back in the DSL, Reyes made just a little progress, showing more doubles power.

2013
DSL:  316/392/425, 212 AB, 15 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 27 BB, 40 K, 16-21 SB

In his third DSL season, Reyes finally started to hit.  In fact, he had a big year, drawing a lot of walks, stealing bases and hitting for gap power.

2014
R:  236/271/280, 157 AB, 7 2B, 8 BB, 38 K, 9-11 SB
A-:  258/258/258, 31 AB, 13 K, 1-1 SB

Reyes went backwards offensively in his first season in the US.  He not only stopped hitting, he stopped drawing walks and struck out a lot.  He played mostly short, but saw some time at second.  The Mets moved him up at the end of the year for ten games in the New York-Penn League, where he played short.

2015
A-:  228/266/284, 232 AB, 9 2B, 2 3B, 10 BB, 56 K, 12-16 SB
A+:  143/250/143, 7 AB, 1 BB, 3 K

Reyes filled in for a few games in high A, but once the NYPL season began he played short regularly there.  He again appeared to be overmatched at the plate.

2016
A:  199/262/263, 312 AB, 7 2B, 2 3B, 3 HR, 26 BB, 97 K, 28-30 SB

Reyes spent the year at West Virginia.  He started the season as the regular at short, moved to a utility role when Cole Tucker joined the team, and became the regular again when Tucker was promoted.  He hit very little, although he did do a great job of stealing bases.

2017
A+:  232/272/312, 362 AB, 13 2B, 5 3B, 2 HR, 19 BB, 106 K, 24-32 SB

The Pirates moved Reyes up to Bradenton, where he played all over the field:  40 games at short, 36 in the outfield, 21 second, 12 at third and three innings at first.  In the process, he got into most of the team’s games.  His hitting remained poor, although he continued to steal bases.

2018
A+:  310/424/386, 197 AB, 6 2B, 3 HR, 39 BB, 60 K, 23-26 SB
AA:  250/319/315, 108 AB, 4 2B, 1 HR, 10 BB, 37 K, 11-12 SB

Reyes became a free agent in the fall, but the Pirates re-signed him for 2018.  He started off with Bradenton, playing second base semi-regularly and also seeing time at second and third.  He hit surprisingly well, possibly helped by dramatically improved plate discipline.  He also had great success at stealing bases.  At the end of June, Reyes moved up to Altoona and served as a utility player.  He didn’t hit so well there.  Reyes saw time at second and third, and in center and right.  He didn’t play much short at either stop.

Reyes was slated to be a free agent again in the fall.  He appears to have re-signed, although it wasn’t reported anywhere.
