WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE |
Rennard pitched in junior college in 2015, then didn’t pitch in 2016 before spending two years as a swing man at Michigan. As a junior, he had a 4.43 ERA, with 15 walks and 65 strikeouts in 65 innings. As a senior, he missed six weeks with an arm strain, but was able to throw 37 innings in five starts and six relief appearances. He had a 3.41 ERA with nine walks and 29 strikeouts. Rennard is a finesse pitcher with good command who doesn’t have great velocity. The Pirates signed him as a non-drafted free agent.
2018 Rennard pitched nine times in relief for Bristol, then moved up to Morgantown for half a dozen games. He wasn’t as effective as the ERAs suggest, as he allowed a .385 OBP. He had a lot of trouble with left-handed hitters, allowing them an OPS of .905. 2019 Rennard pitched in relief for West Virginia and, to put it mildly, got hammered. Opponents put up a 378/434/505 line against him, with right-handed batters slugging .603. Unless there’s something the Pirates think they can fix, Rennard might not be a candidate to return in 2020. |
