SCOUTING REPORT
|
Almora is the best high school defensive center fielder in the draft, with a great arm and great range. He’s an above-average hitter who hits to all fields with a simple swing. He doesn’t hit for much power right now, but has the potential to add power in the future. He’s very polished for a guy coming out of high school, and adds good makeup and work ethic to the package of tools. His cousin is Orioles’ shortstop prospect Manny Machado.
The talent in the first round drops off after pick number seven. The Pirates pick eighth, and Almora looks like one of the leaders of the tier that follows the top seven prospects. The Pirates have a lot of outfield talent, so drafting Almora wouldn’t fill a need. However, you draft based on talent over need, and Almora is definitely talented enough to be taken eighth overall. |
