WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

Grullon didn’t sign until he was 18 and didn’t get much playing time until he was 19.  He received enough of a bonus to show the Pirates think he has some potential.  His height is listed by various sources as 6’0″, 6’4″ or 6’7″.  His fastball ranges from the upper-80s to 93, and he also throws a curve and a rudimentary change.

2011
DSL:  0-1-0, 5.40 ERA, 2.00 WHIP, 5.0 IP, 7.2 BB/9, 7.2 K/9

Grullon pitched only briefly after signing.

2012
DSL:  1-4-0, 4.23 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 27.2 IP, 4.2 BB/9, 7.2 K/9

The Pirates used Grullon as a starter in the DSL, but he still didn’t get many innings.  He pitched respectably.

2013
R:  0-3-0, 5.09 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, 17.2 IP, 3.1 BB/9, 10.2 K/9

Grullon had an uneven season in the GCL, mostly as a starter.  He showed good stuff, as evidenced by his K rate, and didn’t walk many, but he got hit hard at times.  Lefties hit .320 against him.  He missed a month starting in late July, making just one relief appearance after that.

2014
R+:  0-0-0, 1.17 ERA, 0.26 WHIP, 7.2 IP, 1.2 BB/9, 9.4 K/9

The Pirates sent Grullon to Bristol, but he only managed to make three starts spread out over three weeks.  He allowed just one hit and one walk in 7.2 IP, although he also hit three batters.  He ended up having Tommy John surgery in August.

2015
INJURED

The Tommy John surgery kept Grullon out all season.

2016
A-:  1-1-0, 7.50 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, 6.0 IP, 3.0 BB/9, 10.5 K/9

Grullon finally got back into action, albeit for only six innings.

Grullon has the ability to turn into a prospect, but he’s thrown only 64 innings in six years as a pro.  It’s impossible to guess what would happen if he managed to put in even a meaningful portion of a season.  He became eligible for the Rule 5 draft in 2015 and will become a minor league free agent after the 2017 season.
