The Pirates signed Florencio at age 20. He obviously has very good size. At the time he signed, he threw 88-91 with a slider, but by late 2019 he was sitting at 91-93, reaching 94.
2019 A little surprisingly, the Pirates sent Florencio to Bristol and he spent the season in the rotation, not missing a start. (It probably helped that the Pirates used a six-man rotation.) He was pretty shaky, with control and gopher ball problems leading to an opponents’ line of 282/377/481. (His xFIP was 5.86.) Considering that he was making his pro debut at the level, though, it wasn’t a bad showing. 2020 2021 Florencio spent the season in the Bradenton rotation and had a breakout year. He fell two-tenths of an inning short of qualifying or he’d have led the league in ERA by a wide margin, and he did lead in strikeouts. He showed excellent command, missed plenty of bats and held opponents to a 197/277/303 line. Florencio pitched well at home, but he was deadly on the road, holding opponents to 175/252/249. 2022 There’s not much to analyze here; Florencio’s season was a disaster. The Pirates stuck with him through 15 starts and he also made six relief appearances. Opponents battered him for an OPS of 1.001 and he did not get better as the season went along. Florencio needs a reboot, but it won’t happen soon. He left a spring training game with some sort of injury involving his forearm and is out for the year. |
