I couldn’t find out a great deal about Williams when he was drafted except that he was the #3 starter on 2008 NCAA Division II champion Mount Olive. The Pirates selected him as a senior and signed him shortly after the draft. He doesn’t throw very hard.
2008: Pitched out of State College bullpen and was erratic, which made him one of team’s better pitchers. As an example, he had a stretch near the end of the season when he allowed runs in six straight appearances, 12 ER in 10 IP overall. In his next three appearances he allowed no runs and fanned 11 in just 4.2 IP. Overall K rate at least was very good. Did not have a platoon split. 2009: Returned to State College and pitched mainly in short relief, both of which probably indicate that the Pirates didn’t regard him as a prospect. Had pretty much the same year as 2008 except for a lower K rate. 2010: Opened in extended spring training, but moved up to West Virginia in late May. Like pretty much the entire Power bullpen, had a mediocre season. Didn’t walk many, but didn’t miss many bats and got hit pretty hard. ERA got higher every month and other numbers worsened over time as well. LH batters hit .340 against him, so a career as a LOOGY may not work out. Williams isn’t moving very quickly and will open 2011 at age 24. He doesn’t appear to be ready for high A. |
