WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES |
Schoenfeld is a very raw catcher whom Baseball America characterized, at the time of the 2009 draft, as having good speed and enough athletic ability to move to a corner position. He’s more about potential than performance yet, as he needs work on both ends of his game, but he could have a very high ceiling due to his athleticism. He certainly didn’t put up the big numbers that HS prospects generally do. He had a commitment to San Diego State, but signed with the Pirates for $195,000.
2009-10: Struggled in brief appearance in GCL in 2009, then returned there in 2010. Played only sporadically, possibly because the Pirates were higher on team’s other catcher, Elias Diaz. Schoenfield made good progress, hitting for average and drawing walks, although he struck out a lot, too. Threw out only two of 21 base stealers, while Diaz threw out 41%,, so he probably has work to do defensively. The Pirates appear to be proceeding slowly with Schoenfeld, so he’s most likely to head to State College in 2011. |
