Basulto is a LHP with good size who signed out of Mexico. He throws in the mid- to upper-80s and relies on a changeup.
2011 Before signing with the Pirates, Basulto pitched very briefly in the Mexican League. 2012 The Pirates employed Basulto in relief and he put up strong numbers. Right-handed hitters managed only a .527 OPS against him. Left-handed hitters had an .856 OPS, but that was in only 18 plate appearances. 2013 The Pirates moved Basulto to the rotation and he put up very similar numbers to the previous year. 2014 As they generally do with players who’ve played several seasons in the Latin American summer leagues, or who are 20 or older, or both, the Pirates skipped Basulto over the GCL. He spent the season in the rotation at Bristol and pitched decently. His control was good, but opponents hit .292 against him and he had a subpar K rate. 2015 Basulto was expected to return to Bristol, but he wasn’t activated anywhere until July 13. He appeared in one GCL game and didn’t appear again. Presumably, he was hurt, but I don’t have any more information. Basulto is already eligible for the Rule 5 draft. If he’s back in 2016, he’ll be somewhere in short season ball. |
