Pirates to Promote Luis Ortiz on Tuesday

As first reported by Jason Mackey and Alex Stumpf, the Pittsburgh Pirates will promote right-handed pitcher Luis Ortiz for Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Cincinnati Reds. Ortiz was recently promoted to Indianapolis, where he had two drastically different starts, giving up four runs over four innings in his debut, followed by six no-hit innings earlier this week. Prior to that, the 24-year-old had a 4.64 ERA in 114.1 innings with Altoona, posting a 1.17 WHIP and 126 strikeouts.

Ortiz has worked himself into a Rule 5 draft protection for this off-season, so this is just moving up his impending addition to the 40-man roster. He has great stuff, hitting 101 MPH in his last start, but he can get very inconsistent at times, with shaky control or needing to rely on one pitch because the others aren’t working that day, usually leading to high pitch count innings. His combination of a 4.56 season ERA and averaging under five innings per start tells a good story of his season, but they hide the potential. Ortiz skipped right over High-A this season, jumping from Bradenton to Altoona. It took him until his start on August 9th to really put things together, but he has looked much better in these last six starts (except his Triple-A debut obviously).

I doubt he remains with the Pirates for more than the spot start regardless of results, but he could possibly return for the final week of the season, after the season in Indianapolis ends. Maybe you get the first Indianapolis start Ortiz, maybe you get the six no-hit innings version, but either way, he will probably impress you with his potential.

John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball.

When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.

Excuse me, Luis Ortiz is hitting 101 as a starter?

Catch_22

Right. How the hell did I miss that?

Moss44

Question I do not know the answer to: who was the most recent homegrown international signing to start a game on the mound for the Buccos?

Moss44

Answering my own question – looks to have been Dario Agrazal and his 14 starts in 2019

Damn, forgot about that cameo…I thought it was a trick question and the answer was that it has never happened.

I had high hopes for him. Not sure why other than maybe something to hope on back then. Made the mistake of buying into rankings. Bullington and JVB I figured would fail. I guess Chad Hermansen was my first letdown. Everyone has a first. Used the word hope twice. All you can do is a Pirate fan.

What does this FO have against Bae?

I understand he’s not a pitcher, but do we really need to see MOAR GREG ALLEN, or even Marcano at this point?

1) typically they arent in the business of putting guys on the 40 man roster before they must. They do it sometimes, but not usually.

2) I have no issue with giving the current crop of MLB guys some run. Rodolfo at 2b, for example. Maybe Allen is getting too many PA, but there’s still Cal and Suwinski for the corners.

They may be concerned of using an option this season, so they would have to be committed to keeping him up the rest of the year, or use an option. They may wait and add him the last week of the season like they did with Cruz. That way he stays up the rest of the year and no option is used. With only 28 man roster, it is hard to keep him up if he is not doing well. They would not want to keep him up if he is not playing.

With Castro hitting well, and Newman hitting ok as well, there is not urgency to call up Bae. Since he has to be added to the 40 man this year, I could definitely see them adding him for the last 4 or 5 games, and call it a reward like with Cruz.

Catch_22

I think Allen has some purpose. He’s a switch hitter, with good speed and defense. He can cover for Cal and Jack vs a tough lefty.

You bring up Bae and you’re going to sit Castro? Completely counter productive.

jaygray007

Overall i think we’re in agreement. Not sure if my tone came across correctly.

I’ll say my opiniion in a new way.

Calling up bae is kinda pointless because they currently are playing interesting-enough guys at 2b, LF, CF, and RF.

I think that’s also your opinion!

Catch_22

Where is Bae going to play?

SufferinBuccotash

He can play LF, CF, 2B and DH……Shelton could easily find him ABs at all 4 of those without condemning Suwinski, Mitchell or Castro to the Oviedo Closet.

Newman, Allen, & Gamel really don’t need to be in the line up everyday, or even part time at this point. The Pirates aren’t winning anything. Might as well see what some of the young guys who are close to the majors can do now.

It’s not like there’s anyone in AAA that they need to worry about starting their ML clock at this point. Except maybe Burrows, who is hurt anyway.

Catch_22

Newman, Allen and Gamel are barely playing. If you call-up Bae, he won’t be playing everyday. The positions he plays are covered. When you only have 9 spots, it makes it tough to pencil in 12 rookies all at once. Keep him in AAA where he can play everyday.

Luis Oviedo was in the closet because he sucked and had no business being on an MLB mound.

73ffemt

Could make an interesting candidate for the rotation next year. If nothing else the bullpen potential is nice as well.

James_Robert5

I’m glad he’s getting the promotion; however, I assumed he wasn’t eligible for the Rule 5 draft until Dec 2023

melkel

Maybe his age when he signed, like the draft. Not sure.

Wilbur Miller

Yeah, he was 19, so he’s eligible after four years. His first year was 2019, so 2022 was his fourth. Stumpf is correct on this.

I’m a fan of Ortiz, like the article states, he could look unhittable at times and others, especially against lefties not so much. Either case I will watch that game, at least until the bullpen comes in.

AdministrativeSky236

This is not at all a data supported thought, but a 4.56 ERA with only a 1.17 whip feels like some bad luck to me, especially since im sure a fair amount of that whip is fueled by walks

Catch_22

His fip is close with his era. His problem is giving up homers.

Wilbur Miller

It’s been a pattern with him going back to last year — whatever he gives up comes all at once. No idea about the cause, or solution.

Whatever, giving him a shot sure beats another Beede start.

ricramer

Don’t stop there. Cast off some additional flotsam and jetsam by giving a few other minor leagers a shot. A cascade of promotions from Greensboro on up, eh?
