Pirates Discussion: Trip to Miami, After Victorious Weekend

The Pittsburgh Pirates head to Miami, after managing to take two of three in Milwaukee for the series win. That is something we haven’t been able to witness very frequently.

The Miami Marlins have a roughly league average offense, with a .698 OPS. Their pitching staff is ranked 13th in the majors — 8th in the NL — with a 3.80 Team ERA.

Barring any changes, the Marlins are scheduled to start three left-handers. As has been discussed before, the Pirates have a very left heavy roster, so it should be interesting to see how this series plays out.

Unfortunately, the left handed pitchers aside, the one right-handed starter that’s schedule to pitch for the Marlins is Pablo Lopez, who gets game three on Wednesday.

Last night’s game was another blessing for BC. The All Star Break (aka the Pre-trade deadline GM Meetings) begins 6 days from now. All of the Pirate position players who should be available – Vogelbach, Chavis, Newman, Gamel, VanMeter, and Marisnick are all healthy and productive. Pitchers such as Quintana, Stratton, Underwood and possibly a few others will also be popular with contenders.

Newman to TB? With Franco out the next 5-8 weeks, Newman would help the Rays a lot. Could also be a landing zone for Gamel with Kiermaier out.

Quintana is rumored to be a possible for Toronto, but my favorite would be the CWS.

Stratton and Underwood could fit into a lot of contender bullpens. Vogelbach and Chavis offer some DH possibilities, and Gamel could probably be one of the best complete OF available at a very reasonable price. VanMeter/Marisnick?

mikeschalke

All the Jake haters had to eat a little crow tonight I see. Probably tastes good after a win.

jon6er

Probably not, blind squirrel and all.

mikeschalke

Cheer up buddy!

jon6er

Lol, not your buddy sunshine!

mikeschalke

I’d take a wild guess and say your nobody’s buddy on this site.

jon6er

Lol, what are you like 12 years old?

Wilbur Miller

Here’s something unsettling —

In his worst season since he got to full season ball, Yerry had an ERA of 1.52 and K/9 of 9.5. He’s always had good control, which you don’t see that often with short relievers. Yet this FO left him unprotected for R5 because they preferred Eric Hanhold (career ERA of 5.21 in AAA and 7.11 in MLB) and Anthony Banda (4.99 and 5.60); they also signed Heath Hembree to a major league deal.

Wilbur Miller

Wouldn’t surprise me. Bottom line, though, is that nobody in this FO seems able to tell a baseball player from an armadillo.

AdministrativeSky236

This made me lol

hoffmark83

Raise it! Nice game by Keller.

skliesen

Jake replaces Reynolds and proceeds to hit like him…for one game at least.

Wilbur Miller

Yerry is pitching his way into the circle of trust.

This is Jack….thank goodness he is not still down…..

I bad mouth Hayes, yesterday and he has his best day of the year. I double down on Marsnick today and he has his best day in the last five years. I will be bad mouthing Suwinski tomorrow. He’s going through a rough patch and needs the help.

roibert.kasperski

Well, pick a new target. Jack shouldn’t be bad mouthed after that smack into the wall

roibert.kasperski

Marisnick did what??

1979andCounting

Never never never would have believed he could hit a ball (non wind aided) 419 ft. SMH!

roibert.kasperski

1979andCounting

Christmas in July! Jake a HR and double?? Delay with double and single. Van meter with a double. Almost forgot Newman with 3 hits?! Stunning. Bizarre. Who is the rehab hitting coach? Get him up here…….now.

1979andCounting

JAKE!! So glad I didn’t slander you today lol!

ricramer

Trade him now! Peak value!

PirateRican21

Extend that man!

PirateRican21

Dejong removed after 8 pitches? What did I miss?

1979andCounting

If DeJong wants to stay in the circle of trust, he cannot be walking the first batter he faces trying to protect a 2-run lead.

PirateRican21

Let’s hope that boneheaded decision to pitch Bernard yesterday doesn’t come back to bite us!

mikeschalke

Who’s Bernard?

PirateRican21

That’s what happens when you type on a cell screen you barely see!

roibert.kasperski

He had me going for a couple of seconds….LOL!!

roibert.kasperski

Jake says don’t sweat it! Bednar made sure that they won a series In Milwaukee

1979andCounting

Bucs catching a nice break missing both All Stars this series. Jazz and Alcantara.

PirateRican21

Hey they are missing Reynolds and Contreras!

1979andCounting

That’s a fairly equal trade off actually.

PirateRican21

Shelton is like,

agent00

delay is the new stallings

Wilbur Miller

He’s certainly earning a meaningful look

agent00

gotta be better than perez

emjayinTN

A pitchers Catcher who caught a lot of talented pitchers at Vanderbilt. Path forward, Delay and Heineman would be my two Catcher’s, and Delay would make a perfect backup and tutor for Henry Davis, especially on the defensive side of the game, and the handling of pitchers.

PirateRican21

But faster?

agent00

nah. stallings is the cheetah!

PirateRican21

Right!

ricramer

Holy Crap?!? No walks after five innings for Keller!?!

Wilbur Miller

71 pitches. 👍

AdministrativeSky236

Keller only sitting around 93? A few ticks lower than normal, but if he can locate well I would imagine it won’t affect him too much

John Dreker

He’s throwing a sinker more often and that’s going to be a little slower than the four-seam you’re used to seeing from him.

AdministrativeSky236

Of course, but he’s been 95-96 with his sinker the last few starts so its a bit slower than that

1979andCounting

Caught an inning on the radio with Marlins announcers. They talked about Stallings vs runners stealing is awful, like 1 for the last 27 CS, but they placed the blame on their pitchers not Stalls. They also went on-and-on about how sharp and classy the Pirates uni’s are, talked about the ’70’s and ’80’s uni’s and their flat top caps. I think I’m going to jump over to Marlins radio a few times during this series! They were very listenable.

Wilbur Miller

2 IP, 27 pitches. Sounds good to me.

roibert.kasperski

That is the what Marisnick has to offer on the offensive side. Not much to offer but he will end up on some team that wants the speed heading into the Playoffs. Hope someone really wants him prior to the deadline and we get a lotto pick for him.

PiratePrimate

Someone remind me, again, please. How many OFers do the Pirates have in AAA that are on the 40 man but not on the active roster? I understand they’re going to face 3 LH starters in Miami but Marisnick instead of any number of prospects? What is this, an advertisement to other AAAA players that Pittsburgh is a good landing spot for marginal MLBers?

hoffmark83

Yay! I’ve finally been promoted to double A.

roibert.kasperski

Congrats!!

Drufan11

This is a complete dogshit lineup

Drufan11

Now watch them put up a crazy crooked number. It is just hard for me to get excited about a lineup that leaves both Cruz and Suwinski on the bench. If we want these guys to be stars or above average regulars they need to play everyday.

roibert.kasperski

Up 2-0 in the first lol!!

PirateRican21

And both Cruz and Suwinski are gonna hit pinch hit home runs!

roibert.kasperski

was hoping that you were right…….no grad salami for Jack……

roibert.kasperski

And we get one more courtesy for Marisnick’s speed. Looking forward for the PH HRs 🙂

1979andCounting

Sad news on Pirates.com roster transactions. Heineman on the bereavement list.

Wilbur Miller

I saw that yesterday but didn’t say anything, hoping maybe one of the beat writers would report it wasn’t anything really bad, although I guess it’s hard to see what that’d be. No news in this case may not be good, sadly.

roibert.kasperski

It was at first reported as family medical emergency list per John D here on Friday as well. Hoping it is a typo on the Pirates site. Prayers none the less.

John Dreker

They are the same list, just different names for it. No difference though.

AdministrativeSky236

Fingers crossed everything is ok with the heineman family!

roibert.kasperski

Prayers for Tyler and his family.

hoffmark83

Just when I’ve been getting excited for watching Pirate games again they put out a lineup like this. Smh.

Wilbur Miller

Dumbo just couldn’t wait to return to the early-season idiocy that produced one of the most pitiful offenses in Pirate history. VanMeter and Marisnick, and Diego back in the outfield, while a bunch of actual OF prospects linger in AAA, and Cruz and Suwinski ride the bench. Dumbo has actually managed to sink below Lamont in the pantheon of idiot Pirate managers, and GMBS is mounting a serious challenge to Littlefield for most dimwitted GM.

TNBucs

Even Hurdle’s bad teams would put together nice winning streaks. That hasn’t happened under Shelton and I don’t think that’s a coincidence.

jon6er

A lineup like this is why I won’t risk going to PNC to see a game until a few of these guys are gone.

skliesen

Hard to debate your points and impossible to justify the love affair with subzero WAR Vets BC has for this roster.

He must hate us fans.

Wilbur Miller

I’ve honestly never seen anything this stupid in almost 60 years of following baseball. They brought up a bunch of young guys and the team started producing some offense off and on, instead of none ever. They started generating some fan interest. So, naturally, the morons send nearly all the young guys back so they can go with the lineup that turned off the fans. As far as I can see, the one and only qualification for being on the Pirates’ roster is being a veteran who knows what brand of booze to buy for Dumbo.

I’m so sick of being mad at my organization. Unfortunately no end in sight to the madness.

Wilbur Miller

I’ve said this sort of thing before and I was totally serious — winning baseball games doesn’t enter into this. Hurdle and NH didn’t get fired for losing, they got fired for generating bad stories about clubhouse rancor, plus there was the closer-who-can’t-be-named. These guys know perfectly well that, as long as the profits roll in and they don’t generate those sorts of stories, there’ll be no accountability.

So all that matters with these guys is surrounding themselves with back-slappers who won’t make waves and are happy just to have a nice, comfy home in the bigs. Rookies are unknown quantities off the field, so they might cause trouble. And if they come up and suck, it’ll look like GMBS’ ballyhooed development “plan” isn’t working, so it’s safer to leave them in the minors as long as possible. These guys figure they can ride the “it’s a five-year plan” excuse for a couple more years.

Nothing that happens with the big league club is about baseball. It’s about job retention, cushy work environs and profits.

Rob Baran

This was comical. Thanks for the laughs.

Wilbur Miller

At best, after the deadline, more likely Sept.

PiratePrimate

The Return of Jake the Snake. The only question is will Shelton have him lead off or bat third?

b mcferren

What if Suwinski was the one we trade for pitching?

roibert.kasperski

Depends on the pitcher for my opinion.

b mcferren

we sure do have a lot of left handed outfielders

selling high might not be the worst idea

roibert.kasperski

Depends what is offered in return. Not worth just a guy type of arm to me.

ricramer

Exactly, WHY?!?

1979andCounting

I was concerned about the dfa of LH’s Banda, Fletcher, and now Vieux. But in BC’s defense he has brought in Banuelos and Stout. Not sure this is an upgrade……TBD.

Danatural08

so, who’s most likely pitching tonight?

roibert.kasperski

Wilbur Miller

GMBS and Dumbo are still trying to find that elusive sub-.100 hitter and Perez got too far off track. They want multiple candidates.

roberto

Could we drop this meme? BC and his team are capable. Maybe not good enough, but 29 GMs will fail this year and next.

roibert.kasperski

In former Pirate news, I see that Austin Meadows had his rehab for his twin sore achilles tendons stopped. Both causing problems again.

John Dreker

It was a bit shocking that the Rays kept him relatively healthy because he was always getting hurt with the Pirates. He has 6.6 career WAR and bitter Pirates fans still sing his praises when they want to complain. Imagine paying Meadows and Glasnow $9.1M this year for absolutely nothing, but apparently there are a large group of fans that would trade for both of them right now according to Twitter

Wilbur Miller

I’d rather have the pick. Waters is a flop and the others aren’t in Atl’s top 30.

A deal like this makes sense if a team, here Atl, is facing a R5 crunch. I could see the Pirates clearing depth for a pick.

Last edited 2 months ago by Wilbur Miller
AdministrativeSky236

I absolutely love this idea for a rule 5 crunch

PirateRican21

Pick = more money to spend, yeah I would keep the pick or trade for one if given the choice. Great move by the Braves to add around $2 million to their budget.

Wilbur Miller

I just looked at BA.

AdministrativeSky236

Anything else of note from BA?

Wilbur Miller

He’ll be back on it in a few days.

PirateRican21

Next season he’ll shoot up to the top 25!

PirateRican21

With Reynolds down we need another outfielder, Castillo played two games in RF this weekend! Wouldn’t mind Swaggerty getting a legit look in CF.

TNBucs

He’s earned the opportunity and this is a great time to find out if he’s ready. Unlike his last call-up, this time he could start everyday for the next week.

roibert.kasperski

Gone fishin down Miami way……

PirateRican21

I hope it goes better for the Pirates! That dude got gangster slap!

Wilbur Miller

Better whacked than skewered.

PirateRican21

Noticed that that was close!

Mblee24

I wonder if Reynolds goes on the IL today or tomorrow? I hope it was just precautionary yesterday. I am also hoping Vanmeter gets DFA’d sooner rather than later. The dude has a.582 OPS and is not a great fielder. I’d rather see anyone else on the 40 man up instead of him at this point. I wish they’d just bring Bae up as the everyday leadoff and 2B that would be the perfect swap.

Mblee24

Lets hope not!

RAS TN

Sit him down thru the All-Star game as an abundance of caution, assuming his injury is just minor…need him healthy

Wilbur Miller

If you care so little that you’re clinging to VanMeter and refusing to look for a ML catcher, there’s certainly no reason BRey needs to take any risks whatsoever.

Mblee24

True and it would be nice to see a ML catcher on this team.

Last edited 2 months ago by Mblee24
PirateRican21

They might as well get one, Davis is probably delayed one more year after all his injuries this and last year.

roberto

So you want an excellent catcher who can hit? I mean really hit. You could call the Cubs or the Phils. Their lines might be busy.

PirateRican21

Contreras straight up for Vanmeter!

roberto

Please don’t do that again. I don’t want to embarrass myself in public. Crazy laughing will get my wife and neighbors upset.

roberto

It’s OK. She’s in England and my neighbors already know I am an idiot.
