Prospect Watch: Mike Burrows and Miguel Yajure Pitch Well on the Quiet Day for Offense

Mike Burrows leads the group of pitching prospects going on Sunday.  He has a 1.59 ERA, 29 strikeouts and an 0.88 WHIP in 22.2 innings over five starts this season. Greensboro was rained out yesterday when Sean Sullivan was supposed to start. Adrian Florencio was originally listed for Sunday, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see them both go on Sunday. No starter listed yet for Indianapolis. Max Kranick was originally scheduled for this date, but he pitched for the Pirates yesterday. UPDATE: Miguel Yajure will get his first start for Indianapolis.

Game Recap:

Miguel Yajure made his first minor league appearance of the season after spending the start of the year with the Pirates. He was on a limited pitch count, but he looked strong, striking out five batters in two shutout innings, allowing one hit and no walks. He threw 37 pitches, with 24 strikes. Indianapolis used seven relievers for one inning each after Yajure. Cam Alldred tossed a scoreless frame.  Eric Hanhold and Matt Eckelman each allowed two runs. Jerad Eickhoff gave up a solo run. The Indians had a rough time with men on base. They went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position and all four of their hits were singles. Cal Mitchell stole his sixth base. Canaan Smith-Njigba, who walked twice, stole his fifth base. Oneil Cruz played left field for the third time. He’s batting .189 after collecting two singles.

Game Recap:

Michael Burrows had a strong out on Sunday, going four shutout innings on 62 pitches (43 strikes), finishing with one hit, one walk and six strikeouts. He now has a 1.35 ERA in 26.2 innings, with 35 strikeouts and an 0.82 WHIP. Will Kobos allowed a run in the fifth before being replaced, then Zach Matson threw 1.1 scoreless. Travis MacGregor threw two no-hit innings with three strikeouts. Colin Selby got his fourth save and lowered his ERA to 0.87 with a scoreless ninth. The Curve had a rough day with 14 strikeouts and everyone contributing to that total. However, the strong pitching from Burrows and company meant that they didn’t need much. They had a three-run rally in the fourth inning that accounted for all of their runs. Matt Fraizer had an RBI single to start the scoring, and Brendt Citta drove in a pair with a double, which capped the scoring. Four of their five hits came in that inning. Nick Gonzales dropped to a .188 average, but two walks boosted him to a .337 OBP.

Game Recap:

Sean Sullivan got the start on Sunday and he went four shutout frames on one hit, two walks and three strikeouts. It was a short outing, but he needed 77 pitches to get through his day. He now has a 2.95 ERA in 18.1 innings, with 19 strikeouts. Logan Hofmann followed with a scoreless inning, his first appearance since April 19th. Adrian Florencio took over in the sixth inning of a scoreless game and threw two shutout innings, lowering his ERA from 11.45 to 7.50. Cameron Junker gave up a run while recording one out in the eighth. Tyler Samaniego threw 1.2 scoreless. Eddy Yean had his first rough outing for the extra-inning loss, giving up four runs (three earned) in the tenth. There was no scoring until the seventh when Hudson Head hit an RBI triple. That was the only extra-base hit for the Grasshoppers, who had four hits in the game. Their other run scored on a ground out in the tenth. Henry Davis drew a walk and was hit by a pitch for the ninth time in 22 games.

Game Recap:

Bradenton won 6-5 in a game that was 2-2 until late in the contest. Starter Joelvis Del Rosario went five innings, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk, with six strikeouts. He now has a 5.03 ERA in 19.2 innings this season. Sergio Umana followed with two hitless/scoreless innings. Johan Montero got the win despite allowing three runs (two earned) in two innings. The Marauders scored their first run in the fourth inning on a Jakob Goldfarb RBI single. The second run came home on a bases loaded walk to Mike Jarvis. Juan Jerez doubled home a run in the eighth. That was followed by an RBI single by Jarvis, who would then score on a fielder’s choice. With the score tied in the bottom of the ninth, Jacob Gonzalez doubled, then scored on an error on a ball hit by Juan Jerez. Tsung-Che Cheng hit his seventh double and stole two bases, giving him seven steals. Mike Jarvis stole three bases, and Jase Bowen stole two bases. Both have five steals this season.
