Prospect Watch: Gorski Leads Greensboro, Peralta Strikes Out Nine, Travis Swaggerty Placed on Injured List

Indianapolis plays an early afternoon game today. Luis Ortiz goes for Altoona, trying to bounce back from his worst start of the season, in which he allowed three runs in 3.2 innings of work.

Game Recap:

Jerad Eickhoff had a solid start on Wednesday afternoon, allowing one run on two hits in four innings, with no walks and one strikeout. That was all that Louisville needed, as the Indianapolis bats went quiet with runners in scoring position in the 1-0 loss. Cam Alldred lowered his ERA to 1.46 with two shutout frames. Austin Brice tossed a scoreless seventh and Cristofer Melendez retired all six batters he faced, four by strikeouts. Despite the poor offense, Ji-hwan Bae had a nice game in the lead-off spot with two hits, a walk and his eighth stolen base. Cal Mitchell reached on a single and a hit-by-pitch, while stealing his fifth base. Canaan Smith-Njigba tripled and walked. Indianapolis went 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position. Oneil Cruz had another hitless game, dropping him down to a .159 average and a .522 OPS. He has the lowest OPS of 134 qualified hitters in the International League.

Travis Swaggerty has been placed on the 7-day injured list due to a concussion suffered in yesterday’s game.

Luis Ortiz entered this season as a prospect on the rise after his great performance in Bradenton last year. Granted, he is skipping a level this year, but it’s going to take him some time to recover from this early start to the season. He went 2.2 innings on Wednesday, with four runs on six hits, two walks and one strikeout. He now has a 5.89 ERA through five starts and 18.1 innings. Travis MacGregor has been off to a bad start this year as well, but he followed up Ortiz nicely by going 3.1 innings, with one run on three hits, one walk and two strikeouts. Will Kobos allowed a run in his only inning, then Enmanuel Mejia ran into a rough spot, with six runs (four earned) in his only inning. Altoona dropped a 12-5 decision to Erie.

Matt Fraizer, who has really struggled to get going this year, had a two-run double (his fourth) and an RBI ground out. Jared Triolo doubled (his fourth) in the fourth run, and Brendt Citta picked up a ninth inning RBI. Lolo Sanchez had four walks, giving him a .310 average and a .423 OBP for the year. Citta had two hits and two walks. Carter Bins is off to a .140 start in 13 games, though five of his six hits have gone for extra bases.

Game Recap:

Domingo Gonzalez has struggled this year, but his start on Wednesday night gets his going in the right direction. He went 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks, while picking up seven strikeouts. That lowered his ERA to 8.84 through five starts. Eddy Yean took over in the sixth. Eddy Yean went 2.1 shutout innings, allowing a single, but still facing the minimum seven batters. Wandi Montout retired the side in order in the ninth, as Greensboro won 14-3.

Every starter for Greensboro had at least one hit and one run. Yoyner Fajardo hit lead-off and had a single, double and three RBIs. Matt Gorski hit his eighth homer and drove in four runs. He had 21 RBIs and 21 runs in 22 games, as well as going 8-for-8 in steals. Endy Rodriguez hit his third homer and also drew three walks. Abrahan Gutierrez had a single and his seventh double, while driving in two runs. Maikol Escotto had a single, two walks and three runs. Eli Wilson had two hits and two walks in four trips to the plate. He drove in a pair and scored three runs. Hudson Head hit his fifth double.

LOW-A: BRADENTON MARAUDERS

Game Recap:

Luis Peralta had a line that wasn’t impressive until the last number. He went 3.1 innings on 72 pitches, with two runs on four hits and three walks. However, he managed to strike out nine batters. He now has 32 strikeouts in 14.1 innings this season. The other three Bradenton pitchers combined for four strikeouts in 5.2 innings, so it wasn’t just the opposition. Denny Roman worked through four base runners to throw three scoreless innings. Carlos Lomeli took the loss with four runs in the ninth, though three runs were unearned. Brenden Dixon provided much of the offense in the 7-5 loss, collecting a single, double, homer, two runs and two RBIs. Rodolfo Nolasco had two doubles and a single, with a run and an RBI. Jase Bowen had a single, walk and an outfield assist. Alexander Mojica reached three times on a single, walk and HBP.

First baseman Jacob Gonzalez was named as the Florida State League Player of the Month for April. He batted .448/.513/.731 in 18 games last month.
