The Pittsburgh Pirates (16-21) take on the St Louis Cardinals (20-18) on Friday night at 6:35 PM in the first game of a three-game series at PNC Park. The Pirates are sending out Zach Thompson (2-3, 5.47) to take on veteran Adam Wainwright (4-3, 3.15). Thompson hasn’t allowed a run in 12 innings this month. Wainwright shut out the Pirates for six innings on Opening Day this season.
Here are the lineups. Note the viewing option in the Pirates tweet if you plan on watching tonight:

VanMeter 162, Yoshi 162, the embarrassment of the catching situation…the likes of Underwood. Wilson, Keller on the staff.. how much longer?
#TankForCrews
Yes, please and thank you
With lottery system in place for next year, Pirates are too late with that strategy
That’s actually a good point. Only need to finish Top 3 for equal #1 pick odds
This Crews?
Chavis with another 2 hit game. Better sit him tomorrow.
This is fun
Gallegos put an end to that rally and game, impressive…
Reynolds is way overdue
I’ve been on board the Suwinski train but dude is hitting 179 and dropped a fly ball tonight. Its time him to go back to Altoona/Indy.
On the one hand, yes, and boy would I love to see Mitchell in Pittsburgh as soon as the bus can get him there. On the other hand, if actual performance determined whether you stay or go, there are several dudes who should be optioned before you get to Suwinski.
It’ll happen soon if he doesn’t pull out of his funk
andy haines is garbage. what a hire. truly remarkable. after seeing eckstein….they hire someone who’s worse
It’s like ditching Michael Perez and bringing in Knapp. Next they’ll bring Eckstein back.
There’s a brand of incompetence here that seems like something new.
at this point i’d rather see eckstein back. jesus christ. at least reynolds was good then
What’s the worst part of Pirates team tonight?
A. Offense
B. Defense
C. Bullpen
D. Base running
* Spoiler Alert – No wrong answer
Vanmeter at 2B and Castillo on the bench. AGAIN.
Should be Castillo at SS and Castro at 2B
Yes.
Our AAA team has better catchers than the parent club….Pirates are a joke
so when do you think the pirates will start to try to win games? 2024? 2025?
Nutting gets paid a lot of money for this. Why would he risk spending when there is no incentive to win? Nutting’s a leach, but MLB is broken.
Not in my lifetime!
when they get a new owner or MLB imposes a salary floor and cap…whichever comes first
so never!! hot damn
Only when Bobbo and his Nutlings are gone.
so never?
hey wait a minute…..
Despite playing in a far superior organization, Gorman makes it to St. Louis at age 22…Swaggerty? Hitting .180 in AAA
’16, ’17 & ’18 #1 ’s didn’t help much
Hembree and Banda sound like perfect ingredients to blow a close game open.
There’s a reason they were available to be signed by the Pirates
This is Bonehead BC’s team to a T. VanMeter flubs their one scoring chance, then Hembree and Banda blow up the game. The stoopid knows no limits.
I nominate Heath Hembree for next Pirate to be DFA’d when Contreras is promoted next week.
NH was bad, BC is worse
I wonder if Shelton’s contract rewards him for losses.
C’mon Castro, can’t take the bat out of Key’s hands there. More bad baseball. Cards bring it out in the Bucs.
Not bad baseball, stupid baseball.
Pirates vs Wainwright. Not sure why they need to play this one.
Nickles gets to sell tickets. Nickles gets to pocket money. Very simple. He wishes there were 100 home games.
maybe i’m crazy but i have more faith in the pirates pitching than offense….as far as the future goes. god damn is the offense pathetic
You
😂 😂
fair enough. i just can’t see how you can look at the current coaching staff and players, and think they can get the most out of the offensive prospects the pirates have.
Nothing but love!
❤
My limited take on Castro vs Castillo at short, is that Castillo is the better defensive SS. I’d be interested in hearing from any P2 Milb experts……BNP, anybody?
IMO… Castillo is a better baseball player. Better hitter. Better defender. More versatile.
Bad baseball
The fact I don’t own any Apple products and don’t know where AppleTVPlus even is I will be spared watching VanMeter playing 2nd and batting 5th!
let me tell you about the AppleTV baseball experience, picture quality is the best I’ve seen, but the announcers are worse than what the Pirates have and that’s saying a lot. They don’t have the amazing centerfield camera angle that we get to enjoy when the home team televises the game. Too many interviews and a weird stat that tells you the hit probability after every pitch. Overall B-
You are far too kind. The picture quality might be an A, when it’s working, but overall I’d give it a C- at best because of all the inane jabber and distractions. Agree Pirate announcers, especially those named Brown talk way too much about nothing, this broadcast has three of that type.
If Apple, or any other broadcast, would allow listening to the game sounds without the announcers I’d be glad to rate it an A+. Why do people believe they need some talking head telling them what they can see for themselves or in this case just taliking and not telling them much about the game?
I was going to do the 7 day free trial but I’ve been watching Altoona and Indy’s games. I just got tickets for next Wednesdays Curve game vs Hbg. It’s a 11 am start at City Island. I doubt Davis will be available by then.
My first thought. My second is our choice for first base and batting leadoff. He should be much further down in the order at this juncture.
How much you want to bet Shelton will sit Vogelbach today against the righthander, and start him tomorrow against the lefty?
While the Cardinals come to town promoting their blue-chip 22 year olds, will this cause any self-reflection at all within an organization still trotting out a lineup that includes Vanmeter, Yoshi & Perez? I appreciate the Suwinski/Castro/Castile at bats – I like seeing what we have in Chavis too — but we still seem to move at snail’s pace when it comes to folding in young bats and young arms onto the roster. This is nothing Wilbur hasnt written about 1,000 times.
I don’t care which advanced metric they’re using as an excuse to start VanMeter as often they do, there’s absolutely no reason he should be playing over Castillo.
it’s simple. he’s left handed. they clearly see castillo as a platoon player at this point
Don’t you dare disrespect Veteranosity like this ever again! You must be a millennial Gen X YZ whippersnapper!
