Pirates Game Discussion: Pirates at Padres, 4:10 PM

The Pittsburgh Pirates (19-26) take on the San Diego Padres (29-17) in the finale of a three-game series on Sunday afternoon, with a 4:10 PM start time. The Pirates are sending out Roansy Contreras (1-0, 2.13) for his second start. The Padres are countering with rookie lefty MacKenzie Gore (3-1, 2.06), who is making his seventh career start.

Gamel to the IL. Park is at Petco

Stratton keeps getting hit around and yet Shelton keeps putting him into high leverage situations. When you get a scoreless inning from Stratton late in a game don’t bring him out for another and same for Underwood. If you want to get two innings out of those guys early in the game fine but they continue to fail late in games. If you are trying to build a pitching staff you need to see what the guy you just brought up can do. Shelton keeps thinking the veterans are going to keep this team from losing and that’s border line insanity.

PiratePrimate

Borderline?

jon6er

I guess I’m borderline too since I keep expecting a different result from BC/DS, lol.

SBRO

The list of arms you can trust in a tie game is pretty damn short. I guess that’s what you get when you assemble a pen almost completely out of guys DFA’d by other organizations.

PirateRican21

I know the Padres are not a 100%, but the team hung in there thanks to good and sometimes lucky pitching. LA won’t be as kind. The offense sucks, but let’s face it, the kids we have up playing right now are not projected as starters and yet they are hanging in there for the most part. Normally around June I stop following the team closely, but I just might keep watching this year.

Musgrove 1.7 fWAR, Gore 1.4 fWAR, Manaea 0.8 fWAR. I doubt these kids will see a better group of SP’s all year, and I agree, they hung in!

TNBucs

If Reynolds can get back to his 2021 or even 2019 self, we could be respectable. We’ll still need to overcome poor managing, but maybe there will be some signs of hope as the season goes on.

emjayinTN

The only “signs of hope” I see are Shelton gone, and Don Kelly promoted. Give Kelly the rest of the year to set a lineup. Start to unload the baggage that will not provide any returns – ‘sugo, VanMeter, Michael Perez, Marisnick.

Keep Vogelbach, Chavis, Quintana, and Gamel until the trade deadline. Heineman finally qualified for a batting average, but he is a solid defender. Bring up Delay.

AdministrativeSky236

Was bednar available today?

jon6er

No but Yerry was. I get tired of this stupid shit by Shelton. If you aren’t going to use guys then don’t bring them up to rot on the bench.

1979andCounting

Thought we’d see him in the 10th.

TNBucs

If we had gotten the lead, we probably would have.

1979andCounting

With the ghost runner winning run, thought we’d go with him even in tie. You need your best K guy there.

TNBucs

I hate playing for one run, especially when you’re relying on a rookie to get the run in with one out. But then I rarely like Shelton’s managing.

TNBucs

And that just emphasizes why I hate playing for 1 as the visitor.

MWT

With Castro looking lost and Cruz heating up in AAA, how much longer until they’ve successfully manipulated his service time and will call him up? (While also effectively eliminating any chance he signs a long term deal here)

SBRO

We’re past service time concerns. The bat’s come around, he’s probably as ready as he ever will be at the plate, and I don’t know that another 2 weeks of cooking is going to improve his defense/concentration much. Might as well bring him up Friday.

TNBucs

I’m guessing when we come home.

PirateRican21

Hey Park, you have cleats, use them.

AdministrativeSky236

I dont know how much i love giving up an our with a sac bunt in that situation, guy on second should score on an outfield hit either way so why not let marcano swing away

1979andCounting

With Marcano’s speed, he almost beat out the bunt. And he looks very comfortable bunting, I believe he bunted the previous game too. He just looks to have very good bat control (albeit very sss). That may have been the thinking there, possible first and third with no out, at worst he moves runner to third.

jon6er

Because he only already had two hits, lol.

PirateRican21

I thought the same

AdministrativeSky236

Will at least get to turn it over to the top of the lineup to start extras

skliesen

Cal Mitchell with Game Winning HR! I’m calling it.

roibert.kasperski

Maybe next game. I notice that you did not specify which game he would hit the game winner. 🙂

skliesen

Hayes makes shit happen.

PirateRican21

Crowd’s fastball has lost some zip already , hope he doesn’t regress too far.

AdministrativeSky236

He just hit 95 so I don’t think he has lost too much hopefully

TNBucs

VanMeter’s AB looked like what we expect from Reynolds—laid off a couple of pitches he couldn’t do anything with and then hit a line drive.

MWT

We’re never getting rid of VanMeter…. Are we?

bucsws2014

.988 OPS last 7 games
.821 OPS last 15 games

He’s making a case for himself. Might net a long-shot flyer at trade deadline.

Catch_22

He’s having a nice run here. Could be a decent bench piece for a contending team

skliesen

Not convinced this is anything but SSS luck, so let’s just enjoy riding this Van Meter wave while it lasts.

Catch_22

I guess my thing is – Is Castillo really that much better than VanMeter? Probably not

AdministrativeSky236

If we suffer this whole year but manage to get him for an 18 year old that hits 97 i would be fairly happy with that all things considered

jon6er

I don’t really see any playoff contenders asking about VanMeter at the deadline.

SBRO

He would have to hit like this for another 6 weeks to even get a passing interest, and the risk is about 99% that he wakes up before then and realizes he’s Josh VanMeter.

But it’s been surprising and fun.

MWT

I know I know…he’s playing well enough now to warrant being in the lineup every day. Unfortunately he waited too long and I already made up my mind that I don’t like him. Haha

Catch_22

None of the cool kids like him.

jon6er

Nope!

PirateRican21

Cruz homer on his first at bat today, glad to see he’s not letting the insults of getting bypassed by all this other players affect him.

john_fluharty

He knows if he keeps working hard he’ll be up before the season ends

1979andCounting

Shelton right back to over-using Underwood…….I don’t get it. He uses him with the lead, he uses him trailing, he uses him for multiple innings…..

PirateRican21

I think he’s looking better, I want to see more myself.

1979andCounting

Me too, vs Dodgers with a fresh arm.

PirateRican21

😅

1979andCounting

Gore pitching like a #3 overall pick. Great LH talent.

jon6er

This Yu Chang pick up leads me to believe the Pirates think the words prospect and project mean the same thing!

PiratePrimate

The sad truth is Yu Chang is an upgrade at 1B and that’s almost as comical as the catching situation

TNBucs

With all of our other 1B options being left handed, it’s good to have a right handed option. It’s just a matter of whether Chang can hit enough to be a decent platoon partner.

jon6er

Well upgrading first base over Yoshi and VanMeter isn’t too hard and even though he tied it with a single I’m still not impressed.

PiratePrimate

Really tired of Reynolds refusing to lay off high fastballs.

1979andCounting

15.1 IP from starters last 3 games, only 2 earned runs. Something encouraging.

Wilbur Miller

Too bad the clown show lineup is going to negate Roansy’s performance.

b mcferren

MacKenzie Gore and Hosmer could have been acquired for peanuts a few months ago

jon6er

Nutting’s allergic to peanuts.

PirateRican21

Someone alert Wilburn, a catcher got a hit, a catcher got a hit!!!

jon6er

Did you catch the EV on that hit😏

PirateRican21

Didn’t register, so it was probably going too fast. Just like the laser that Perez hit yesterday that brought home the first run.

MWT

If they could get Mitch going our rotation wouldn’t look half bad right about now

PirateRican21

Where is he going?
In all seriousness, I think he was throwing a sinker with lots of movement in his last outing, I’m interested in seeing it again.

MWT

He’s looked a lot better coming in after an opener starts the game. Should be common practice till he can earn the opportunity to start again, IMO.

JimEastTennessee

Wow, how long until PNC is that full on a Sunday?

PirateRican21

I love when they announce the promotions and add that’s available for the first 20,000! Just say everyone!

bucsws2014

You just wait. By mid-June PNC will become a full-fledged Yu Chang Clan concert.

JimEastTennessee

or ever?

JimEastTennessee

Just showed up – Is the umpire

docdon385

Both The GM and manager have that “don’t question us, we know what we’re doing” attitude but it’s getting to the point where you really have to wonder WTF is Cherington thinking?

john_fluharty

They won’t bring up Martin but they’ll trade for Martin lite.

1979andCounting

Checks roster…..This is an extremely inexperienced group of position players. Actually 8 of 12 could be called rookies. Park only has 160 P.A., Heinemann 80. Now would be the time for someone to carry this team during this injury stretch…..kebryan, and Reynolds are you listening?

john_fluharty

At least they’re playing Marcano and not letting him rot on the bench.

jon6er

I think it’s due to necessity in his case, lol. Once they remove VanMeter from first they will disappear Castillo and Marcano.

b mcferren

follow your nose

tucu tearing it up

Jeff

Cherington is now trolling us Pirate fans.

PirateRican21

Yes, he is.

MWT

Jason Mackey reporting they traded for Yu Chang, formerly of Cleveland. About par for the course.

agent00

there’s the new first baseman lol

MWT

When I saw him DFA’d the other day I had a feeling he was going to end up in a Pirate uniform. He fits Cherington’s mold to a tee. Former prospect/somewhat young/“versatile”/can’t hit

agent00

pirates care more about versatility than actually being a good baseball player

Wilbur Miller

pirates care more about versatility than actually being a good baseball player

FTFY

jon6er

And how’s that working out, lol.

PirateRican21

I rather rage!

Jeff

Front office malfeasance.

1979andCounting

Cash considerations only, so not really a trade.

b mcferren

Cruz eats up that ball because he has longer arms

b mcferren

Brown said BC is looking to trade for a first baseman – – – – – wonder what ideas are being tossed around? Krilloff please

PirateRican21

Bobby Dalbec for Stratton.

b mcferren

Ian Happ would be a fun choice

jon6er

Well they traded for VanMeter so I wouldn’t get my hopes up for anything worthwhile and if they actually trade for a first baseman what does that mean for their plans for Yoshi when he comes off the IL.

ricramer

Really wish they would give Martin a shot.

jon6er

It’s the strikeout thing with Martin that the Pirates will point to as an excuse for not bringing him up. But when he is not k’ing he’s hitting for power which is something no one is really doing for the Pirates at first base.

ricramer

Exactly

jon6er

I guess nothing embarrasses this organization because if you are starting and batting cleanup one Josh ‘Meat Sauce’ VanMeter you should be embarrassed!

Wilbur Miller

Pirates’ cleanup hitters are batting 196/292/298. So there clearly is nothing on earth that would embarrass these idiots.

john_fluharty

Old McClenden quote just popped into my head – we don’t equate winning with success.

jon6er

Examples are endless!

b mcferren

when does Vogelbach come off the dl?

b mcferren

Is Chavis hurt or what?

Born4rf

He was in yesterday is a pinch hitter, staying in the field. So I have to figure they have some sort of splits in mind but… This is simply our best hitter all season from day one. So of course we put no hitting, bad defense
second baseman at first. It just makes sense right?

RAS TN

I was going to comment on Park being recalled for Gamel hurt, but then why bother there are zero reasons for this call up other than just trying to justify the asinine trades with the Yankees. So never mind nothing to see here just move on…

john_fluharty

.390 OBP looks pretty good. Maybe this will be his last shot to show something.

jon6er

At least by bringing up Park they have someone whose poor offensive skills match the majority of the team. And we have Josh VanMeter batting clean-up. Shelton’s managing skills consist of him trying to catch lightning in a bottle!
