Prospect Watch: Three Early Games on the Schedule; Strong Outing for Mike Burrows

Greensboro kicks off an early minor league schedule with an 11 AM morning start time. They will be followed by Bradenton beginning at work and Indianapolis about an hour later. The only night game will have Mike Burrows on the mound for Altoona, making his fourth start. We just had a feature on him yesterday, talking about his performance last week.

Game Recap:

Trey McGough started this game and lasted one inning, retiring the side in order on 11 pitches. Jerad Eickhoff was the listed starter and he took over in the second inning. He went four innings and allowed two runs on three hits, finishing with no walks and seven strikeouts. Cam Alldred faced three batters and retired them on six pitches and three ground outs. Brad Case took the loss with a run in his lone inning. Matt Eckelman threw a scoreless eighth. The offense was rather quiet. Ji-hwan Bae hit his first homer, a solo shot in the third inning. Canaan Smith-Njigba hit his fourth double. Bligh Madris had two walks and scored a run. Jason Delay brought in Madris with an RBI single. Indianapolis had a chance to tie the game in the ninth, but pinch-hitter Rodolfo Castro struck out to end the game.

Mike Burrows had another strong outing on Wednesday night, going five shutout innings on two hits, two walks and seven strikeouts. He needed just 66 pitches to get through his day, with 43 pitches going for strikes. He now has a 1.00 ERA in 18 innings, with 23 strikeouts and an 0.78 WHIP. Noe Toribio went three innings, allowing one run on three hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Austin Roberts picked up his first saves with a scoreless ninth. Altoona won in a low scoring game, taking the 2-1 decision from Akron. Lolo Sanchez reached base in all four plate appearances. He collected his first double and scored a run. His double was the only extra-base hit for the Curve. Matt Fraizer drove in both runs with a seventh inning single.

Game Recap:

Starter Domingo Gonzalez worked through some control issues and had a little help from the bullpen in his 3.2 shutout innings on Wednesday morning. He gave up two hits, walked five and struck out five, throwing 85 pitches, with 45 going for strikes. Jack Carey struck out a batter with the bases loaded in the fourth to strand three inherited runners. He picked up the win by throwing 3.1 shutout innings on two hits, no walks and three strikeouts. The only run allowed was unearned and it was off of Tyler Samaniego, who walked three and struck out three in his lone inning of work. Cameron Junker finished it off with a scoreless ninth. Greensboro won 3-1, getting a solo homer from Abrahan Gutierrez, his first of the season. Henry Davis had two singles and stole a base. He picked up an RBI on a ground out, which started the scoring in the game. Dariel Lopez capped the scoring with an RBI double in the eighth, his first double of the season.

Game Recap:

Starter Luis Peralta cruised through three innings on Wednesday afternoon, then ran into some trouble in the fourth with two outs. He walked three straight batters to end his day, with one of those runners scoring on a walk by reliever Dante Mendoza. Peralta record nine strikeouts for his 11 outs. He threw 77 pitches, 44 going for strikes. Mendoza finished the fourth, then gave way to Jake Sweeney, who tossed three shutout innings on three hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Carlos Lomeli got the save, giving up one run on two hits and two walks in two innings. Bradenton won 6-2, with Jase Bowen and Juan Jerez leading the offense. Bowen hit his fifth homer and had two singles. Jerez had three hits, two runs and two RBIs. He collected his third double. Mike Jarvis and Jacob Gonzalez each had two hits. Gonzalez is hitting .473 with a 1.355 OPS. Rodolfo Nolasco had a single and two walks.
