Published:

Altoona and Bradenton have promising prospects going for them today.  MiLB.com, on top of things as always, has Roansy Contreras going for Indianapolis, but that’s going to be kinda tricky, what with him being in St. Louis and all.

Game Recap:

Michael Burrows started his season well and Liover Peguero drove in four runs as Altoona (1-1) pummeled Harrisburg, 9-1.  Burrows threw four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and walking nobody.  The three pitchers who followed give us an idea of the depth of talent on this team.  J.C. Flowers gave up an unearned run in two innings.  Austin Roberts fanned three while retiring six straight and Tahnaj Thomas had a 1-2-3 ninth.  Peguero drove in two runs each with a single and a double.  Nick Gonzales and Jack Suwinski each hit their first longballs of the season.  Suwinski’s blast was an opposite field shot off a lefty.  Gonzales reached base and scored three times.  Blake Sabol had three hits.

Game Recap:

Jase Bowen belted a pair of home runs as Bradenton (1-1) routed Dunedin, 12-4.  Bowen connected with two on in the first and one on in the eighth, for five RBIs.  Po-Yu Chen started his season well.  He gave up a hit and a walk in the first, leading to one run, but retired the side in order the next three innings.  Darvin Garcia had a rough outing, giving up four runs in his second inning without retiring a batter, mainly due to walks.  Carlos Lomeli, last year’s 17th round pick out of St. Mary’s College, made his first pro appearance with the bases loaded and nobody out.  He walked in Garcia’s fourth run, but then got out of the inning.  Lomeli finished with three scoreless and hitless innings, with six strikeouts.  Luis Peralta fanned three in a scoreless ninth.  Juan Jerez added his first full-season home run and drove in three overall.  Tsung-Che Cheng reached base three times on a walk, a single and a double.  He scored three runs and stole two bases.  Rodolfo Nolasco and Jacob Gonzalez each had two hits.

Having followed the Pirates fanatically since 1965, Wilbur Miller is one of the fast-dwindling number of fans who’ve actually seen good Pirate teams. He’s even seen Hall-of-Fame Pirates who didn’t get traded mid-career, if you can imagine such a thing. His first in-person game was a 5-4, 11-inning win at Forbes Field over Milwaukee (no, not that one). He’s been writing about the Pirates at various locations online for over 20 years. It has its frustrations, but it’s certainly more cathartic than writing legal stuff. Wilbur is retired and now lives in Bradenton with his wife and three temperamental cats.
