AFL Recap: Peoria Walks Away with a Win on Wednesday Night

Published:

Peoria had the late game on Wednesday in the Arizona Fall League.  They came into the day with a 1-5 record, though that lone win saw all four Pittsburgh Pirates pitching prospects throw in the game. In Wednesday night’s game, Nick Gonzales batted lead-off at second base, and Canaan Smith-Njigba batted fifth and played left field. Here’s a recap of their night.

Gonzales walked to start the game. He moved to second base on a single, then came around to scored on two wild pitches. He struck out in the second inning, then struck out again in the third inning with the bases loaded to end the inning. Gonzales flew out to center field in the fifth inning. He finished up 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.

Smith-Njigba walked in the first inning. He reached base on a ground out in the third inning, stole second base, then scored a run. He walked on four pitches in the fourth, then grounded out to second base in the sixth. He finished 0-for-2 with two walks, his second steal and a run scored.

Peoria won 5-4 in a game that was limited to seven innings.

Here’s the boxscore

Peoria will be at home tomorrow night at 9:35 PM EDT to take on the Mesa Solar Sox.
